ASFL2 MLB Day-to-Day Pickem - Rules

Introduction

Day-to-Day Pickem has been around this website since the ABL days when we used the game as an accent to our baseball sim league. Day-to-Day Pickem was the second unofficial game in league history (NIT Pickem being the first) back in March of 2008 and has lived on ever since.

The premise is simple. Pick one MLB team each day to win it's game. If you're right you gain points. If you're wrong, you lose points. If you go on a streak, the number of points you gain with each correct pick inceases. A game may also be designated as a Double Me Up (DMU) where the points you gain for a correct answer are doubled if you're right and the same is true of the result if you're wrong. It's not out of the ordinary for a decent percentage of members to finish in the negatives.

The monthly winners and the top overall performers for the regular season will qualify for the playoffs to be held in September and October based on the remaining MLB regular season games.

How it Works

To participate you need to go to the "Sign Up" page and register. The game is free for all ASFL2 members and $5 for all non-members. Payments from nonmembers need to be sent to bsoester@bellsouth.net on PayPal. If you cannot use PayPal, email the commissioner to work something out. If you are a member make sure you're entering your name as it appears on the ASFL2 members database. When registering you can choose to receive an email reminder to make your picks at midnight each day if you have yet to. You can change your email or password after registering by using the appropriate links on the game's front page.

Once registered you can submit your weekly picks via the "Submit Picks" link on the game page and review them via the "Review Picks" link. You can only select each MLB team twice in a given game week or playoff round. If you qualify for the playoffs the same principle applies, but you'll need to use the playoff version of the links. If you pick a game and it's postponed on the MLB schedule you'll need to make sure the day the pick was made for is accounted for within three days via the "Change Postponed Pick" link. To keep track of all game scoring you can follow the "Game Standings" link.

To help you make your decision, we've provided the full MLB schedule and MLB team schedules that can be viewed by day (full season if a team's schedule), game week or month. The game also provides detailed MLB Standings including full league, monthly and head-to-head standings as well as the projected end-of-season standings based on current winning percentages. Once the season begins, Day-to-Day Pickem specific stats will also be available via the "Game Stats" link.

We also provide Probable Starters that we update as often as possible. We also provide News & Notes on MLB happenings and events within the game.

To help enchance the interaction, I strongly encourage discussion of the game and the MLB season on the league message board.

All tiebreakers will be handled as follows:

1) Number of Correct Picks
2) Number of Correct DMU Picks
3) (Correct) Pick Percentage
4) (Correct) DMU Pick Percentage
5) Longest Streak
6) Run Differential (RF-RA)

You're awarded the score denoted each day based on the length of your winning streak. If you've won four in a row and correctly pick your fifth in a row, you'll earn three points for that day and would have earned nine total points from that streak. Streaks carry over from month to month, but reset at the start of all playoff rounds aside from the final round. If a member picks a game that is denoted as a DMU he receives twice as many points as those shown on the chart to the left based on his result for that day. Any game designated as a DMU by the commissioner (or assistant) will be scored as a DMU no matter when the member picked the winner of it, always check to make sure you know whether or not your pick is a DMU.

Any day where a member fails to make a pick before the daily deadline he or she will automatically be credited with a loss for that day.

A member can choose to select a "pass" for any day with less than 6 MLB games scheduled at the time of the member's selection. If the "pass" is chosen, the member won't be credited with a result for the day (nor receive any points) and his current streak will carry over.

Deadlines & Postponed Games

Selections for each day must be made by the beginning of the first MLB game of each day. Use the "MLB Schedule" link on the game page to determine when that is for each season. If a game doesn't have the right start time on the schedule page please notify the commissioner as soon as possible.

If you select a game that is postponed to another day you have the option to use the "Change Postponed Pick" link to change your game for to be scored for that day. All postponed MLB games must be made up for Day-to-Day Pickem purposes within three days. If your original game is postponed by more than three days, you must change your pick or you will be scored with an automatic loss, unless it is after the 27th of any month where you'll be credited with a "pass". You're always free to choose another game within the three day (not including the day of the postponement) post-postponement span. If your make-up pick is also postponed past the original three day limit, you'll need to pick another game or face the automatic loss.

If a game is postponed without an immediate makeup date, it will be set in the system to be played on the day after the last day of the season. You'll need to pick a new game within three days or face an automatic wrong pick.

Playoffs

To ensure that all participants are alive throughout the season, all monthly winners will automatically qualify for the playoffs.

From there, the number of playoff qualifiers will depend on the number of entrants. If there are less than 46, 20 will qualify for the postseason (including monthly winners). If there are more than 45, 25 will qualify for the playoffs and if there are well more than 45 participants that number may also be increased. For 2010, 25 members will qualify for the playoffs.

Why keep trying after you win a month? Easy, aside from the potential to win the regular season $10 Money Leagues credit, the better your overall regular season result the more bonus points you can earn for the first, second or even third rounds of the playoffs (exact numbers below).

The First Round of the playoffs will be held during the first ten days of September. All streaks will start over and the top 15 members at the end of the round will advance to the second round. The better the finish in the round the more bonus points earned for the second round on top of any regular season bonus points earned.

The Second Round will be held over the second ten days of September (the 11th to the 20th). Once again all streaks will start over, but this time the top 10 members will advance to the semifinals. The better the finish in the second round the more bonus points in the semifinals on top of any regular season bonus points earned.

The Semifinals will take place over the third set of ten days of September (the 21st to the 30th). Streaks will start over for the final time and the top five heading into the final month (and weekend) of the season will qualify for the Final Round continue to make picks to determine the playoff champion.
