The 2011 MLB season will see a shift in the schedule which affects the structure of Day-to-Day Pickem's schedule as well. Unlike in previous seasons, this season won't kick off with a single game on Sunday night. Instead, the 2011 season starts on Thursday, March 31st with six games. That's five days ahead of when most teams began their season last year.
The change to the start of the season alters two things for Day-to-Day purposes. First, it now means that March is in play, although for scoring purposes, March 31st is essentially April 0th. All picks made for the first day of the season will affect your score for April. Second, with there now being six games instead of one on opening day, you can no longer pass to start off the season (the maximum number of games you can pass is five), but there will likely still be at least one DMU.
With the start of the season moved up, the end of the season had to be changed as well. Instead of also finishing on a Sunday, the season will now end on Wednesday, September 28th. That translates into five less days of playoffs and October no longer being a part of the schedule. With five less days, the first three rounds of the playoffs will see their lengths altered. The first round of the playoffs will add an extra day to end on September 11th, while the second and third rounds will each shrink from ten days to a week. This change will put even more importance on earning bonus points from your regular season finish and your first round finish.
I'll be reevaluating the number of automatic qualifiers from the regular season once I have a feel for how many participants there will be this season, but all month winners will qualify once again. I'll be revisiting the bonus points for regular season finish at the same time. All but the first and last week of the regular season will remain the same as last season with the usual dates moving back one day (which will happen every year, aside from leap years). The first week will now cover the first 11 days of the season (March 1st to April 10th) instead of the first eight and the last week will cover ten days (August 22nd to August 31st) instead of nine. Ultimately, the schedule change means there is one less day on the full schedule in comparison to last season. |
