Three months, three final day decisions. This time, Tom Vobejda came out on the right side of the decision, instead of being the runner up for the third month in a row. At the conclusion of the final weekend of the month, Mike Brekke led at 32 points, followed by Greg Krause at 26, Matthew Hardman at 25, Tom Vobejda at 22 and Jeffery Murowsky at 21. At that point, Greg Krause had the big advantage as he was on a nine game streak, if he won out, the month win would be his.
That advantage ended quickly as both Krause and Brekke incorrectly picked the Diamondbacks on the 27th with Hardman also picking the Rockies incorrectly to shake up the advantage toward Vobejda and Murowsky who moved to a four game streak. All five front-runners made a correct pick on the 28th, with Brekke being the only member not to correctly pick a DMU. That gave Vobejda the inside track to the month win with Murowsky also having a clear path ahead of Brekke. Krause and Hardman would need a lot of help from this point forward. With each of the top three picking correctly on the 29th, the standings heading into the final day stood at: (1) Vobejda 33, (2) Brekke 32, (3) Murowsky 32. All three members could still have won the month with a correct pick or an incorrect pick. Here were the possibilities:
When the deadline passed on the final day of the month, both Murowsky and Brekke had picked the Tigers to win while Vobejda had picked the Pirates in a DMU. The Tigers were the early game, if they lost, Murowsky was instantly eliminated; if they won, Brekke was out. Either way, the member still alive after the Tigers' game needed the Pirates to lose in the evening in order to win the month. The Tigers took care of the Mets 5-2 to give Murowsky hope, but the Pirates knocked off the Blue Jays 6-2 in Toronto to finally get Vobejda over the hump and into the playoffs. Despite finishing last amongst the three still alive on the final day, Mike Brekke finished with the best record for the month at 25-5 to earn 0.33 extra bonus points. Matthew Hardman was the only member to reach a double digit streak for the month at ten for the extra 0.33 points. He led on 6/23 when the streak ended, but finished the month 3-5 in the last eight days to drop to fifth. Kevin Cheek went 5-1 on DMUs for the month to earn 0.33 extra bonus points as the best record of anyone to pick at least three DMUs. The bonus point standings are now updated to reflect those earned for the June results. |
