Fantasy Formula 1 - Brazilian GP Preview
4:11 PM on November 9th, 2015 by Nathan Susanto

Message Board

The first running of the Brazilian GP was a non-championship event at Interlagos, São Paolo in 1972. The event joined the Formula 1 calendar a year later. After local hero Emerson Fittipaldi won back-to-back races in 1973 and 1974, Carlos Pace continued the Brazilian winning streak the following season. Pace died in a plane crash in 1977 and in his honor the Interlagos venue's name was changed to Autódromo José Carlos Pace in 1985.

With the Brazilian fans getting behind Rio native Nelson Piquet, the event transferred from Interlagos, which was struggling to meet the modern demands of the sport, to Jacarepaguá in Rio de Janeiro in 1981. The venue went on to host the Grand Prix throughout the 1980s.

Following the success of another son of São Paulo, Ayrton Senna, officials put into motion a revamp of Interlagos so it could once again stage the Grand Prix. The original layout was 4.975 mi (7.960 km), comprising of long straights linked by fast corners in between two lakes. The circuit's length was nearly halved during the venue's modernization, but the officials got their wish and the event moved back to Interlagos in 1990.

The 2008 race saw one of the most dramatic finishes to the World Drivers' Championship. Felipe Massa took the checkered flag and briefly thought he had snatched the title from Lewis Hamilton. However, a last lap overtake on Timo Glock saw Hamilton spoil the party, sparking confusion and despair in the Ferrari garage.

The 2015 Formula 1 season reaches its penultimate event, with the Brazilian GP taking place this weekend. Lewis Hamilton might have stormed to the title but Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg came out on top last time out by securing the Mexican GP after a strong weekend. Rosberg will hope his success continues at Interlagos, a venue which brought him fond memories 12 months ago.

Nico Rosberg claimed pole at Interlagos in 2014 by a narrow margin and it was nip and tuck between him and Lewis Hamilton on race day. Rosberg held the slight advantage but when the leader pitted for a second time Hamilton saw an opportunity to up the pace. However, on lap 28 Hamilton pushed too hard and spun off, handing the advantage back to Rosberg. Hamilton reeled the lead Silver Arrow in but couldn't deny Rosberg victory. Felipe Massa was a distant third.

Remember to make your game picks in the 2015 Fantasy Formula 1 thread before the deadline of Saturday, November 14th at 11 AM ET, when qualifying begins. Here we run down some Brazilian GP facts and season stats.
