The newest ASFL2 Fantasy Games, NFL Pickem and NFL Locks, began their tenure Thursday night with the Saints visiting the Packers. It was a great game and a great example of the benefit of the new scoring system(s).

The Packers led 42-27 when the Saints began their penultimate drive with 5:35 left in the game. If you were one of the 66 members (88.3%) with Green Bay, you should have felt fairly comfortable at that point, but that doesn't mean you should have been content with your score.

At a 15 point deficit, those who picked the Packers to win by a single point would have earned just that single point, a New Orleans score would have benefited you, even if it meant they were closer to the upset. If you predicted the Packers to win by seven points, the Saints getting a TD with a two point conversion would have made you happy. If you had picked the Saints to score 35 points, that same TD-and-two-points scenario would have been nice as well.

When New Orleans got the ball back at 1:08 left, down by eight points, then promptly made it down to the Green Bay 18 in five plays, perhaps you regretted cheering them on to the extra points. Or, perhaps you picked the Packers to win by three? A New Orleans TD with a missed two-point conversion would have earned you 14 points instead of ten. Even better, a made conversion could turn into a winning Packers field goal in overtime. With each score, or possible score, the permutations change.

Skip Wilson became the first leader in the history of NFL Pickem with 51 points from the opener. He was the only member to correctly pick the Packers to win by eight points with his prediction having each team scoring four points less than they actually did. Chad Gumm and Ken Patton scored 50 points in second place. Colt Ciccone was the only member to correctly predict either team's score as he had the Saints to win at 34 points.

With NFL Locks, the scenarios are simpler. If you picked the Packers, you wanted the Packers to keep scoring. The more they won by, the better your score. But if you picked the Saints (which in this case, no one did), you needed the Saints to keep scoring regardless of whether or not they make it all the way back to win the game as that shrinks the number of points you lose. If the Saints had forced overtime, but still lost- those who picked the Packers would have earned five less points while those with the Saints would have lost ten less points.

The scoring systems are designed to keep things interesting until the end of the game. The first game of the season proves the goal has been achieved in both games.
