ASFL2 Newsletter #11 (12/17/09)

As many of you may have noticed the league has made a number of changes in the last few months. It's time for an update about them as well as information on the new ASFL2 season.

League Improvements & Fall Wrapping Up

Hopefully you've noticed the changes to the standings pages in the last two months. The Fantasy Football overall standings page has featured weekly recaps since week 6 and has given updates each week for each league with projected championship point totals. Once the Fantasy Football season is over in two weeks I'll be able to update the championship standings within 24 hours or so assuming my holiday schedule cooperates. Once Fantasy Football is completely updated, I'll make sure Salary Cap Football & NFL Pickem are also up to date before finally trying to cope with Survival Pickem.

A new Fantasy Hockey standings page layout debuted two weeks ago and has been updated weekly since with updated standings, weekly win/loss standings, league roto standings and projected championship points to go with league schedules and an ASFL2-wide roto table with the overall standings as well as the standings by category.

Fantasy Basketball will have the same standings set up as Fantasy Hockey once my schedule allows me to work on it. I'm hopeful to have it set up by mid-January with Fantasy NFL Playoffs & NFL Playoffs Pickem taking a slightly higher priority.

New ASFL2 Fantasy Games Section

Fantasy NFL Playoffs & NFL Playoffs Pickem would be the second and third games to be added to the new ASFL2 Fantasy Games section of the website joining College Bowl Pickem which was announced and opened last week.

The deadline for College Bowl Pickem is this Saturday, December 19th at 4:27 PM EST. In order to compete you need to sign up for the game on the website by using your name as it matches in the ASFL2 members database in "First Last", standard capitalization format. Once you've signed up you can submit your picks, but make sure to enter your name and not a username when doing so. After submitting your picks you can review and re-submit them at any point until the deadline. After the deadline has passed you can check the game standings with each bowl. I hope to be able to update standings as soon as each bowl game ends, but it will ultimately depend on my holiday schedule. The projected championship points earned will also be updated with each game. All other entries will be visible to you once the deadline has passed as well.

Fantasy NFL Playoffs is about 65% to 75% done on the website (but not publicly). I still have a few major features to code into the game, but I'm cautiously optimistic it will be done in time to allow for it to be run through the website and not the message board. Either way, make sure to pay close attention to the website and message board around the end of the NFL season for further details.

NFL Playoffs Pickem will be worked on once Fantasy NFL Playoffs is done. Should I not have enough time to set it up on the website, it's certainly a simple enough game to handle on the message board. NFL Playoffs Pickem updates should go hand-in-hand with Fantasy NFL Playoffs updates.

Going forward I plan to move all tier five ASFL2 games onto the website from the message board as well as many unofficial games as possible, such as MLB Day-to-Day Pickem and the Home Run Pool.

The Present & 2010-2011 Season

That's enough about the past and future for now, on to what's currently going on aside from College Bowl Pickem.

First and foremost, Fantasy Golf is now available signaling the start of the third ASFL2 season, the 2010-2011 season. The ASFL2 group ID is 371 and the password is 123456. Please join as soon as possible. If the league fills up, check the website and message board for a new group ID.

The second game of the season, Fantasy NASCAR, should be available in about a month, perhaps less. Make sure to watch the website and message board for the game information.

There are a few new things going on with the league aside from fantasy games news as well,

With the new season around the corner, league recruiting is a priority and I've formed a recruiting team to help me try to attract new members so I can focus my efforts on building the games on the website in the coming weeks. If you're interested in helping out or have any ideas on what we should be doing, please reply to this thread.

As a first act of advice from the team, I've changed the structure of the league message board. The non-ASFL2 relevant sections are no longer visible to those that haven't reached "Full Member" status (400 posts). This will hopefully make it easier for new members to understand and use the message board as I'd love to see a greater percentage of members discussing the sports world going forward.

As a second action following the formation of the recruiting team, I've created an ASFL2 Facebook Group to try to help spread the word about the league. I've placed two other members in charge of using it. If you have a facebook account, please join the group.

Getting away from the recruiting team, the league is looking for a new logo to help re-vamp the front page of the domain to feature links to ASFL2 and its various sub-sections instead of the original ASFL. I'd love to hear your opinion on potential logo ideas this thread.

The new logo should also feature on some league merchandise in a week or so (hopefully) for those that have mentioned being interested in a t-shirt or other league paraphernalia.

Miscellaneous

There are a few other things I'd like to mention...

First, there are about eight spots available in the upcoming ASFL2 Keeper Leagues Fantasy Baseball season including at least one spot in each of the league levels.

The drafts for the upcoming baseball season are available and waiting for members to submit their players to be kept. The deadline to submit your keepers is January 31st with drafts likely to start sometime in March.

If you're interested in participating, fill out the Keeper Leagues sign up form. I will start filling teams with members off the waiting list and new members in the coming weeks.

Second, I'd like to take a minute to discuss how to go about vetoing a trade in an ASFL2 league.

This is directly from the rules pages,
Veto Procedure
The ASFL2 commissioner will only be direct commissioner of two individual ASFL2 Fantasy Football leagues. For that reason all potential veto suggestions need to be emailed to the commissioner if the trade isn't taking place in League 1 or League 2. Assistant commissioner's do not have the power to veto or put through a trade in Yahoo!.

The commissioner has set up all ASFL2 leagues to send Yahoo! transaction emails to a secondary email account which also receives website form submissions or confirmations. All trades are analyzed by the commissioner when received. If the commissioner feels at first glance a trade isn't fair he will post a poll for the trade on the message board in the Big Four Fantasy Sports section. If upon first glance at a trade the commissioner feels a trade might be unfair he'll wait for further feedback email agreeing with his notion from the league in question. If a few emails are received a veto poll is posted on the message board. All emails to the commissioner need to be sent directly to commish@theasfl.com, any emails through Yahoo! will be sent to an address that cannot be replied from and the emails may not be seen in time for action. If a trade veto goes to the league message board a notification will be posted on the Yahoo! league message board as a warning.

If the poll thread produces a result which the commissioner decides agrees with a veto the commissioner will sign onto the appropriate Yahoo! ID to veto the trade. The commissioner will never allow a trade before it's expiration time or interfere with a trade before it's expiration time otherwise. This is done to ensure consistency between trades amongst all leagues as they are observed by assistant commissioners of different activity levels.

and lastly, I'm going to state publicly that I hope to have more official, Yahoo! games moved onto the website at some point in the next year or two, but don't anticipate many being moved in the foreseeable future. The games most likely to make the switch are the four pickem games (NFL, College Football, NCAA Tournament & Survivor).
