ASFL2 Newsletter #12 (2/13/10)

I'm sending this out a few days later than I had hoped for reasons you'll read below. Hopefully everyone saw the Fantasy NASCAR information on the league website and message board around a month ago and has since joined one of our four groups.

ASFL2 2010-2011 Season Updates

Usually I go about season news in chronological order. Not this time.

As was just mentioned, Fantasy NASCAR is available with the first race of the season (the Daytona 500) slated for Sunday at around 1:15 PM EST. If you aren't already in one of our groups, please join our fourth group. The ID is 28092 and the password is 123456. Those who aren't in by the end of the race on Sunday will need to join with a team that has 0 points.

Fantasy Baseball has also just opened with the ASFL2 draft times available as of Wednesday morning. There will be a record 12 leagues this season for a maximum total of 168 possible teams. I already have 66 members accounted for in three days, but there are still plenty of members I need to hear from. If you haven't given me your preferences please reply to this thread or reply to this email with the four (or so) drafts you'd most like to be designated to and any drafts you simply can't make. Here are the times:

Sunday, March 21st at 4 PM EST
Tuesday, March 23rd at 9:45 PM EST
Wednesday, March 24th at 8:15 PM EST
Thursday, March 25th at 8:30 PM EST
Saturday, March 27th at 4:45 PM EST
Sunday, March 28th at 6:30 PM EST
Monday, March 29th at 8:45 PM EST
Tuesday, March 30th at 10:30 PM EST
Wednesday, March 31st at 9:15 PM EST
Thursday, April 1st at 11 PM EST
Friday, April 2nd at 9 PM EST
& an autopick league.

I believe this is by far the best accomodation of as many time zones as possible in league history. Those that wish to be in the autopick league will need to respond very quickly as it is already more than halfway filled. Twenty-eight have also included the draft on the 21st as one of their preferred dates.

League designations should be sent out in around ten days to two weeks via email. Please be watchful of my email and notes on the league website that they've been sent. Once you receive your league designation, please get into your assigned league as soon as possible to make my job easier.

For the drafts that happen during the final week before the MLB season starts (April 4th), I may need to email Yahoo! directly for them to manually edit the league's start week as they've told me they may not be able to accomodate it through the given settings. If that's the case in your league, don't panic...I'll be working to fix the problem. If you notice any other league settings that don't match those on the Fantasy Baseball settings page, please let me know.

With it being mid-February, two other games for the new season are right around the corner. NCAA Tournament Pickem should be available in a week to ten days on Yahoo! and as soon as it is the ASFL2 group info will be available on the league message board. The other game right around the corner is ASFL2-specific, MLB Standings Pickem. I plan on beginning work toward putting it on the league website Sunday or Monday. Normally the game would open on March 1st on the message board, and if I don't see myself succeeding at coding the game within about a week of the start of March, it will likely be conducted via the message board again. Watch the league website for updates around the start of March.

Non-Regular Competition News

The first bit of news is pretty standard. With the opening of Fantasy Baseball comes ASFL2 Keeper Leagues draft information.

The Keeper Leagues drafts are now set up for each member to mess around with their list, round designations and other settings, but I don't intend to open up the drafts themselves until the final week of February or the first week of March. If you've used the ASFL2 Drafts application before, your password should be whatever you used most recently. If you haven't, your password should be set to what you used for NFL Playoffs Pickem. If neither of those work, email me and I'll sort it out. I also intend to stagger the start times a bit between divisions. Yahoo! league ID and passwords will be emailed over the weekend, please get into your league as soon as possible or you may be replaced. All emails should have further draft time and draft page information.

I have been testing the drafts application for the last few days to try to squash any bugs related to having the pick order broken up by players being kept. I don't anticipate any major problems after testing, but there is a chance of a problem. Should one arise, I will do my best to come to a fair solution. If you notice anything acting strangely, please notify me immediately. Once the final draft pick that was used for a keeper spot, there should be almost no chance of a problem.

ASASFL Fantasy Baseball draft information will also be sent out this weekend, but I don't have the draft pages together yet. The Champions & Third League will again have their drafts conducted on the website while the Super League will again have its draft done via Yahoo! Live draft. The Third League draft will hopefully begin next Wednesday, pending everyone getting into the Yahoo! league. The Champions League will again have a draft of selection order based on 2008-2009 rank with an 18 hour time limit between picks conducted via this thread. I've kicked things off by taking the second pick in the draft. I hope to start the draft in a week to ten days. League IDs and passwords will be sent out over the weekend along with other draft information.

The last bit of news in this section is the most important. I have now officially opened up the ASFL2 Money Leagues. The Money Leagues section will feature prize pay-outs in Fantasy Baseball, Basketball, Football & Hockey as well as pools for the NCAA Tournament, Super Bowl & BCS National Championship Game. The draft sports will feature a choice of four different buy-in options, four different league sizes, slow (through the ASFL2 website) or live draft and unlimited transactions or a transaction limit. The section is now open to Fantasy Baseball team purchases with NCAA Tournament Pool sign-ups available once Yahoo! opens the game up.

I've added the Money Leagues section to the website to expand the league's portfolio of offerings, to provide the opportunity for each member to have a higher level of competition than the already high standard in the regular competition and most importantly, to try to raise funds for the league to have a chance at longterm viability. The model is to hope for the Money Leagues and traffic generated from the Fantasy Games and all other pages on the website to cover the costs of having and running the website. Hopefully you noticed the notes on the front page of the website about moving to a cheaper server last weekend to also help that cause. The move will also allow me an unlimited number of databases to use toward the Fantasy Games and all other features of the website. All of this is done in an effort to keep the league alive for the foreseeable future without having to charge membership fees.

ASFL2 2009-2010 Season Updates

There isn't as much news on this front. NFL Playoffs Pickem & Fantasy NFL Playoffs results have been finalized and updated in the championship standings. NFL Standings Pickem results should be calculated and updated on the website in the next week.

There are only two games remaining to begin for the season, NBA & NHL Playoffs Pickem which won't be available until early-to-mid April.

Even if you aren't in the hunt for the championship, remember that you can still earn a trophy for finishing in the top three overall or by winning your conference. Even then if you miss out on those opportunities, your results could qualify you into the Champions League or Super League next season.

As a final piece of news, please use the Absenses/Departures List thread to let me know if you're going to be out of town for a period of time so I can plan accordingly and let you know what you'll miss.
