ASFL2 Newsletter #16 (2/4/11)

We've reached one of the busier parts of the season for game sign ups. Time for a newsletter.

Games Available

There are five games available for sign up with three more unofficial games available in the next week or so.

The Fantasy NASCAR season starts tomorrow with the Daytona 500. The ASFL group ID is 126 with a password of 123456. Please get in a group before the race ends or you won't be eligible to earn any championship points for your team's performance in the race. Also, please make sure you're joining a group with a display name, team name and/or email address that make it easy to identify that the team you've joined with is your team. If I can't figure it out, your team will be removed and points forfeited. If I do figure it out, but none of your information matches what you signed up with, you will be docked bonus points.

The next game, chronologically, in the league timeline is NCAA Tournament Pickem. The ASFL2 group ID is 596 with a password of 123456. The brackets won't be available until Sunday, March 13th with the deadline to fill out your bracket being the following Thursday.

The first draft game of the season is also available. Fantasy Baseball draft time preferences are now being taken. I've already received 84 preferences and hope to email league designations this week. There are 11 drafts available with the potential for a 12th if enough responses are given. Here are the available draft times:

Sunday, March 20th at 7 PM ET
Tuesday, March 22nd at 8:45 PM ET
Wednesday, March 23rd at 10:30 PM ET
Thursday, March 24th at 9 PM ET
Friday, March 25th at 9:30 PM ET
Saturday, March 26th at 3:45 PM ET
Sunday, March 27th at 5:15 PM ET
Monday, March 28th at 9:15 PM ET
Tuesday, March 29th at 11 PM ET
Wednesday, March 30th at 8:30 PM ET
& an autopick (or 2)

Make sure to send me your preference as soon as possible so that I can place you in a draft that works for you. Once you receive your league designation, make sure to join the league as soon as possible to secure your place in an ASFL2 Fantasy Baseball league this season.

The last new game available is also the first website-based game of the 2011-2012 season. MLB Standings Pickem will be run on the league website for the second time. To participate, simply go to the game page, sign up and then submit the standings and playoffs portions of your entry. The purpose of the game is to predict the final standings and playoff results of the 2011 MLB season. The deadline for entries is Thursday, March 31st at 1:05 PM ET.

The fifth game, Fantasy Golf, has been available since the second week of 2011 and is still available to sign up for until the start of the MLB season. The ASFL2 group ID is 399 and the password is 123456.

The first game soon to be available is MLB Day-to-Day Pickem. This is the first unofficial game of the season, but if the NFL or NBA lose their 2011-2012 season to a lockout, I will be moving MLB Day-to-Day Pickem to the official game list as a tier 5 game for the 2011-2012 season. If that is to happen, bonus points earned through the game will be automatically turned into championship points and removed from the bonus points standings. The purpose of the game is to pick one MLB team each day that you believe will win its game. If you're right, you gain points. If you're wrong, you lose points. Winning streaks increase your point total for being correct and you're limited to picking any one team twice in a week. For more information on how the game works, check out the rules page.

Two other unofficial games will also be available in the next week or so on the league message board. Fantasy F1 will be run once again by Nathan Susanto and Mike Miles after a successful season last year. AFL Pickem will make its return to the unofficial game list after being one of the first unofficial games in league history. Fantasy F1 will mimic Fantasy NASCAR in structure and game play, while AFL Pickem will mimic NFL Pickem, with the difference being that the games being picked are from the Arena Football League. Both the AFL and Formula 1 seasons start on March 11th. Watch for more information on the league website and message board this week.

New League Features

Since graduating in December, I've been spending my time recruiting new members and improving or creating league features.

The latest improvement is the new Points Log database. Every instance of a member earning championship points in league history is available in the database. You can sort all points by season, calendar year, month of the year, fantasy game they were earned in, method of scoring, point amount, or date. You can also specify which member(s) earned the points or search within the explanation of how the points were earned while also limiting the amount of events per page. Whenever a point is earned it will be updated in the database. Always check to make sure any championship points you feel you've earned are updated in the database. I also plan to create a similar page that will display the championship standings based on the same settings you can use to sort the Points Log page.

The last major improvement, the ASFL2 Chat Rooms will be put to good use during the NASCAR season and NCAA Tournament. The new NASCAR room is the perfect place to talk about the race as it happens, while the new College Basketball room is the perfect place to discuss the tournament happenings while avoiding your boss at work.

Minor improvements are also being made as the 2010-2011 overall standings page now displays the real-time qualification breakdown for the 2011-2012 ASASFL participants. Watch developments throughout the rest of the season. The breakdown will also be available on the 2011-2012 overall standings page once the season is further along. I've also taken the time to break conferences down to the zip code level. For more information, check this thread on the message board. After a suggestion, I'll also be breaking up Virginia a little bit with the northern portion of the state moving to the Northeast Conference. Watch the website and message board for updates, all new conference breakdowns are in effect for the 2011-2012 season, including any future Virginia split.

My Current Major To-Do List:

1) Set up Fantasy NASCAR overall standings pages.
2) Finish Fantasy Golf overall standings pages.
3) Finish setting up MLB Day-to-Day Pickem, AFL Pickem and Fantasy F1.
4) Determine new championship points system.
5) Create Points Log Standings sort page (as mentioned earlier in the newsletter).
6) Improve ASFL2 front page.
7) Move official games from Yahoo! to the Fantasy Games section while also working on getting simple unofficial games on the website.

While I work on those things, I'll be recruiting new members and working on standard updates as well as the little things that need to get done. If you can help out in any way, please check this thread.

Removing Yourself From the Newsletter List

I've finally fully automated the newsletter process to where they are now sent automatically through the website instead of my email account and they are not sent to members that are deemed retired, inactive, or banned.

If you want to be removed from the newsletter's email list, you need to update your Member Profile, including your status and which games you do or do not want to participate in.

I hope to have the option for active members to no longer receive the newsletter emails by the next newsletter.

I've also added a "Forgot Password" button to the edit member profile page.
