In 1962 Mexico held its first grand prix, a
non-championship event but run to Formula 1 rules, at the
country's first international circuit, Magdalena Mixhuca in Mexico City. Lotus
drivers Trevor Taylor and Jim Clark shared the spoils that day, but the
event was marred by the fatal crash of local boy Ricardo
Rodríguez.
The race was granted championship status the following
year and was a constant fixture on the calendar until 1970
when spectators became uncontrollable, with many running
across the circuit.
It wasn't until 1986 when the event returned. The venue
was the same but by this time its name had changed to
Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, in honor of Ricardo
Rodríguez and his brother Pedro, who had died in 1971 in a
sports car race in Germany.
The layout was popular with drivers but
the track was bumpy and Mexico City's air pollution and
unstable population were problematic, so the event was
dropped after 1992.
Attempts at a revival, perhaps at a new venue near Cancún,
came and went in the first decade of the 21st century.
When businessman Carlos Slim Domit got involved, though,
the event's return became a reality. The proposed 2014
race was aborted but after a circuit upgrade the venue was
ready to host the 2015 meeting.
Though the venue for the Mexican GP has remained
unchanged, the layout has had to alter due to F1's
modern safety standards. This has meant the loss of the
iconic slightly banked final corner, Peraltada.
On Sunday, Lewis Hamilton secured his third world title
but there are still three rounds to go in the 2015 Formula
1 season and this weekend sees the return of the Mexican
GP to the calendar. The last time F1 raced at the
Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was 23 years ago and another
British world champion, Nigel Mansell, triumphed. The
circuit has changed since but Hamilton will hope he
continues the British success in Mexico City.
Remember to make your game picks in the 2015 Fantasy Formula 1 thread
before the deadline of Saturday, October 31st at 2 PM ET,
when qualifying begins. Here we run down some Mexican GP
facts and stats.
