n = Total number of members participating in a game. m = Maximum championship point total awarded for the standings in question. r = A member's rank in the standings in question. The above formula will be the basis of the new scoring system. I strove to keep the new system similar to the old one while improving in four key areas. First, I wanted to make sure all members participating in a game earned more championship points than those that didn't participate. The new system makes it mathematically impossible to score zero points in a game unless there are more than 2,500 participants- in which case I either have to revisit the system or revisit the maximum points being given out. Second, I wanted to be able to have the point totals awarded for a member's game rank available well before the end of the season. With the new formula, any member can use the game's respective rules page to do the math based on the number of participants at the end of the season. Third, I wanted to be able to accent the prior two pieces with the ability to project the championship standings from each game and subsequently for the full season. The hope behind it was to give more meaning to the day-to-day and week-to-week results. My final goal was to try to create a more balanced championship race. The last two seasons have seen a sizable gap between the top handful and everyone else. With game point totals now more linear, I'm hopeful of that being accomplished. The championship points awarded for final game rank in any game the league runs will follow the above formula with fractional points now possible for the first time. Anything that would be described as "rank points" will see a simple transition with their old value for first place being the new "m" value. All other championship points awarded based on another set of standings within a game, from week win bonus points to second chance points will also see the formula used as the basis with the "n" value being decreased and a separate "m" value. For example, all sectional points will see the "n" value divided by three (or two in half-season scenarios) and points based on round finish in Fantasy NFL Playoffs will see the "n" divided by four. With non-Football draft games, the formula will apply to everything but playoff results which will be rounded and adjusted to give more weight to elimination games versus consolation games. With Fantasy Football, I've decreased the number of championship points awarded per game away from sixth place from two to one with the base number still being 15. I've kept a win worth two points and a tie worth one point. All other aspects are based on the new formula with the playoff results also rounded in the same fashion as other draft games. If this doesn't help you much, the Game Scoring rules pages are updated for all games that have completed from the 2010-2011 season and are set for the 2011-2012 season. This excludes College Football Pickem, NFL Pickem and NFL Survival Pickem as their championship points structure may change with a move to the website before their game season begins in the 2011-2012 season. Non-Draft game scoring rules pages are equipped with a form that will allow you to adjust the values with the default values on the form being the weight each game was given and the current number of participants. The tier system will remain in place with the maximum total points from each game reflecting a game's tier, length, popularity and difficulty. Both Fantasy Football and Baseball will see up to 111 points available in tier 1. Fantasy Basketball, Hockey and NASCAR will each have around 85 points available in tier 2. NFL Pickem, College Football Pickem and Fantasy Golf should have around 65 points available in tier 3. Survival Pickem, NCAA Tournament Pickem & Fantasy Premier League will have 30-40 points available in tier 4. Playoffs Pickem, Standings Pickem, College Bowl Pickem & Fantasy NFL Playoffs will have 15-25 points available in tier 5. For the foreseeable future the only item I hope to revisit from year to year is the maximum points ("m") value in the scoring equation for each game. Generally, this shouldn't be necessary barring wide fluctuations in the number of participants from game to game. Of course, three years from now I could be in a similar position as the one that got me here in the first place... Due to the new rules, all games will stop taking new participants after a section has passed where points are awarded for sectional results. For example, Fantasy Golf sign ups will no longer be accepted after week 12 due to the end of the winter segment. The new formula will also be used when handing out bonus points for unofficial games. Hopefully you've already noticed the new scoring system in place with the Fantasy Golf and Fantasy NASCAR standings pages or with the new Projected Championship Standings page. |
