Heading into MNF Duffill trailed Mazurek 64-63 with Tony Gonzalez & Matt Ryan up against Lance Moore and Jason Elam. One of the best matchups heading into MNF of the season to date. They went back and forth with Duffill hanging on in the final two minutes as Matt Ryan threw for 48 extra yards with Tony Gonzalez receiving 14 yards of it for three spare points on the Falcons final two drives before his hail mary interception was affordable in the scoreline.

Heading into MNF, Burton lead 82-70 while having Robert Meachum & Jeremy Shockey left to go up against Michael Turner. A 12 point cushion is large, but when it's a top three player up against a TE and a third WR it shrinks sizeably. Turner pounded away for over 100 yards, but only found the endzone once and was nullified by the Falcons being down in the fourth quarter to preserve Burton's win as Shockey's seven points provided the cushion.

Another classic example of a Monday Night quandry. A single defense trying to overcome a deficit. In this instance, Dillard had New Orleans' defense while heading into things down 100-82. New Orleans' style of play doesn't lend the team's defense to low scoring games leading to Dillard having to hope for a defensive TD to have a chance at pulling it out.
Once he got his wish with 42 seconds left in the first half the lead would be 5 points or less the rest of the way. The situation came to head at the two minute warning as Miles led 100-98. Matt Ryan's arm was hit as he threw and the refs ruled a fumble with the Saints' recovery giving Dillard the tie, but it was overturned by replay to put him back down a point.
As the drive ended at the 1:42 mark it appeared as though Miles had secured a 2-point win, but with the Falcons still having a timeout the Saints didn't bleed the clock and wound up fumbling the ball back to Atlanta with 1:23 left in the game. That set up a nightmare scenario for Miles as a New Orleans fumble recovery would tie and an INT would give Dillard the win. The nightmare was an inch closer to coming true when New Orleans sacked Matt Ryan with 52 seconds left to close the gap to one point, but the Falcons were in field goal range and the three points allowed would knock a point off Dillard's total. New Orleans failed to generate a turnover or sack on the rest of the drive and the Falcons elected to go for the field goal as they were down 11.
When Jason Elam capped off the drive with a FG to up Miles' lead back to 100-98, it appeared to be over. But Atlanta had the chance at an onside kick. Once the Falcons recovered the kick after a muffed diving catch on a short hop from a New Orleans speacial teamer, Miles had to survive another drive without a turnover in the same point scenario as a minute earlier in the game. After a 14 yard pass it looked like Atlanta would have to throw a hail mary as a last ditch effort which for Miles would hopefully be knocked down, but instead the pass rush forced Matt Ryan to throw the hail mary too early and Darren Sharper came down with it without a Falcon around him to give Dillard the win at 101-100.
Certainly a nominee for game of the season at the halfway point.

Honorable Mention |
|
•Forest Thomas 60, Dan Gettle 58 (LG2)- Great scoreline, but three bye week players for Gettle and no MNF players make this an honorable mention and not a nominee. Thomas managed the win despite having Steve Slaton score -1 points for him.
|
•Ben True 100, Ken Webb 89 (LG2)- Heading into MNF, Webb led 89-67 with True having the Saints defense and Marques Colston left to play. Heading into the scenario you should feel comfortable so long as the defense doesn't score a touchdown or hold the other team under 10 points. Unfortunately for Webb, New Orleans' managed to run an INT back for TD with 42 seconds left in the first half almost 10 minutes of game time after Colston had scored a TD himself.
|
•David Synychak 103, Tyson Hester 95 (LG5)- Hester trailed 103-76 entering MNF with Drew Brees left, but came up just short. If Brees had turned his INT into a TD Hester would have won the matchup by one point.
|
•Jason Kaplan 48, Pierre Bergeron 47 (LG)- Tremendous matchup...especially if you like them lowscoring. Kaplan led 30-28 heading into MNF with the classic QB (Drew Brees, for Bergeron) going up against his WR (Colston) scenario, but with a twist in a second WR (Devery Henderson) up against his QB. The odds were heavily in Bergeron's favor, but Brees threw one of his two TDs to Colston while throwing an INT to lead Bergeron to the one-point loss despite a 300 yard game. Why is this an honorable mention and not a real nominee? Kaplan had his QB, TE & D on bye and still managed to win with a 48 point performance.
