Tidbits |
• League 1 saw five teams fill each of the point values between 91 and 95 with 94 beating 93.
• Andrew Maher scored 100+ points (102) for only the second time this season, but lost to Trevor Lynn in league 1 due to his eclipsing the century mark for the first time (120). He's been bridled with another bad luck this season for the entire International Conference.
• John Dipinto scored 82 this week in a league 1 loss after scoring 83 points in each of the last two weeks.
• Nate Morse scored 105 points this week in a five-point league 2 win to keep his streak of alternating sub-67 point and 103-plus point weeks dating back to week 4 of the season. He's now 5-4 on the season.
• Chad Luik and John Marinelli could muster just 100 points between the two of them this week in a league 2, 69-31 Luik win. It is the lowest combined score in recorded ASFL2 history. Luik scored 69 points this week after scoring 68 last week. He's now 6-3 on the season.
• Bill Waxman's scored 84 points in league 2 for the second straight week after scoring 95 & 96 the prior two weeks.
• Alex Pacelli managed the top score in league 2 of 112 points despite having Anquan Boldin in his lineup with a 0.
• 64.3% of league 3 is within a game of .500 for the season.
• Anders Nilsson scored 80 points in league 3 a week after scoring 81. He's scored between 80 and 85 points five times this season.
• Tim Schneider saw Jay Cutler (30), Andre Johnson (10) & Cedric Benson (13) combine for 67.9% of his total for the week in a 78-67 win over Kevin Cheek in league 4. Cheek saw Phillip Rivers (21), Tony Gonzalez (10) & David Akers (14) combine for 67.2% of his total. Cheek's 67 point week came on the heels of back-to-back 100+ weeks.
• Mike Dipinto doubled his point total from last week in league 4 while keeping Matthew Reber winless in a 91-73 victory. He managed just 45 points last week.
• Dale Frederick scored 122 for his fourth consecutive week over the century mark and to stay atop league 4.
• League 5 featured three matchups of teams scoring totals in the nineties versus teams scoring in the fifties.
• Anthony Lombardo scored 73 points this week in league 5 a week after scoring 74.
• Russ Goatcher won 109-92 in league 5 to remain the only one perfect for the season in all of ASFL2. He's now eclipsed the century mark in four of the last five weeks and has scored 95+ all but twice this season.
• Aside from a semi-close seven-point matchup, league 6 was a showroom for blowouts this week. Excluding the seven-point game the differences were- 34, 41, 21, 26, 46 & 26 for an average margin of victory of 32.3 points.
• Nick White scored 102 points in league 6 this week for his third week in a row in triple digits and his fifth total.
• LeRoy Cushaway Jr. scored 61 points in league 6 for the second straight week to maintain his astouding sporadic consistency this season. He scored 100 or more three times and 66 or less five times with an 81 point effort in week 2 the only outlier.
• Vern Lemke managed 119 points this week for his fourth straight week of 110 or more points in league 6.
• Robert Flatt nearly doubled his total from last week of 48 with a 93 in a loss to the high scorer in league 6.
• Vern Lemke and Eoin Adams have the same record in league 6 (7-2), but Lemke has scored 275 more points than Adams. That's 42.0% more and an average of 30.6 points per week.
• Brad Wilson scored 110 points in both league 6 and league 7 this week.
• Nathan Oake was four Kevin Walter points from having a lineup with every player in double digits in league 7. No wonder he had the high total for a 14-team league this week. This was his fourth week in a row over the 100 point mark with three of those being over 120 points. It was his sixth week over the century mark total.
• Pierre Bergeron & Bill Richmond combined for just 110 points in league 7. Bergeron won 65-45. None of Richmond's players made it to double digits.
• Aaron Rodgers managed a third of Susan Gantz's 60 points this week. Jay Cutler managed half of it for her opponent (Mike Miles) in league 7.
• League 8 saw four contests decided by ten points or less.
• Eddie Fritch only had three of his players score in double digits this week in league 8, but still put up a strong 115 points. Jay Cutler (40), Hines Ward (16) & Seattle's defense (26) accounted for 82 points for 71.3% of his team's total. Cutler & Seattle alone accounted for 57.4% to lead Fritch to his second win of the season.
• Throwing out the one-point, game of the week nominee matchup, league 9 featured five games with differences of 30 points or more: 55, 48, 59, 30 & 35. That's an average margin of victory of 45.4 points.
• Steve Campbell won 105-75 in league 9 this week to move to 8-0-1 on the season.
• Ryan Drzik scored 108+ points for the fourth straight week with five of the last six being over 100 points and six of the last eight being over 100 in league 10.
• Ryan Rodebush saw Tom Brady (18), Larry Fitzgerald (24) & Atlanta's defense (17) combine for 68.6% of his team's total (86) in league 10. It was just his second trip over 81 points for a week, while he's only had one trip under 74 points.
• Bill Isley saw Phillip Rivers (21) & Pittsburgh's defense (25) combine for more than half of his team's total for the week of 91 points in league 10.
• The league leader for each league has the following record: LG1: [8-1]; LG2: [6-2-1]; LG3: [8-1]; LG4: [7-2]; LG5: [9-0]; LG6: [8-1]; LG7: [7-2]; LG8: [8-1]; LG9: [8-0-1]; LG10: [8-1].
• All sixth place teams in ASFL2 leagues have a record of 5-4 or the equivilent (4-3-2), aside from two. Ed Peck in league 6 at 6-3 and Ronny Funderburk in league 10 at 4-5 are the exceptions.
• Six ASFL2 leagues have seventh place teams with records of 5-4 (leagues 3-8) while the other four all have records of 4-5.
• The last place team for each league has the following record: LG1: [0-9]; LG2: [3-6]; LG3: [1-8]; LG4: [0-8-1]; LG5: [2-7]; LG6: [0-9]; LG7: [3-6]; LG8: [1-8]; LG9: [1-8]; LG10: [2-7].
• Based on those numbers alone, league 2 is by far the most balanced ASFL2 league with league 1, league 6 and league 9 the least balanced in either direction.
• 56 of the 128 ASFL2 teams are within a game of .500 through 9 weeks of the season. That's 43.8%.
• Steve Campbell is the only member to have clinched a playoff spot in any ASFL2 league. He's four and a half games up on the seventh place team in league 9 with four games left.
• There are three members eliminated from the playoffs: Andrew Maher (league 1), Matthew Reber (league 4) & Jason Oroszi (league 6). They're also the only three members without a win on the season. Three other members have yet to win two games on the season and are on the verge of elimination for next week as well as the six teams without three wins.

Heading into MNF, Soester led 93-79 with Thomas having Brandon Marshall & Jeff Reed left. Heading into MNF, the slight edge should go to Thomas, but the first half expanded the likelihood as Marshall had 8 catches for 82 yards while Reed tacked on a point to make the deficit 93-88. Marshall and Reed added another point each in the third quarter for a 93-90 scoreline. Marshall tacked on another point just over 2 minutes into the fourth quarter with Reed making the deficit one point with 7:03 to go in the game. Denver went three-and-out on their next possession to further delay the seemingly inevitable. On the ensuing Steelers drive Soester needed a Denver defensive pass interference or any other Denver penalty resulting in an automatic first down and the Steelers the ability to kneel out the clock within the final two minutes to keep the lead, but Roethlisberger threw the screen to Hines Ward setting up Jeff Reed's game-tying extra point. The game could have ended in Thomas' favor had Reed converted a field goal, but it would come down to one minute and 22 seconds of Thomas needing Brandon Marshall to get ten receiving yards for the win instead of the tie. Sure enough, Denver's first play of their final drive was a 12 yard Brandon Marshall catch to give Thomas a 4-5 record and an increased chance in the postseason. Soester loses his second game in a row after starting 7-0 in heart-breaking fashion with Adrian Peterson & Dustin Keeler (whom I'd like to believe would have scored at least one point) on a bye.

Hurst trailed the matchup 96-69 heading into MNF with Heath Miller & Pittsburgh to go. Once Pittsburgh managed a pick-six this matchup had life to it. At that point the defense was worth 17 points, they went on to add two sacks and another INT for a worth of 22 points. With Heath Miller being useless on offense the matchup came down to Hurst needing two sacks and an INT on the final drive for the win. Unfortunately for him the Steelers picked off Kyle Orton's fourth pass of the drive without having sacked him for the one point loss. Had Heath Miller managed just two more yards Hurst would have tied the game. Had Miller caught the TD pass with under two minutes to go it may not have even been noticed for a game of the week nomination.

Heading into SNF, Moir trailed Rossetti 71-38 with just two players to go. It looked like all was lost when Miles Austin was catchless through half of the fourth quarter, but his winning, 49-yard TD reception gave the matchup a little bit of life heading into MNF with Moir having Ben Roethlisberger left. It didn't look as though Roethlisberger was going to pull things out through the first half as he had yet to taste the end zone. It looked even worse when he fumbled early in the thrid quarter, but his late surger made things interesting. Two TDs in the final two quarters of the game set up a deciding drive to determine the matchup. Moir needed him to pass for 27 yards and a TD to tie the game. Unfortunately for Moir, the Steelers were up 21-10 and not likely to pass the ball. Roethlisberger didn't pass until the 7th play of the drive from Denver's 28. After a 7 yard Hines Ward catch, Moir needed the final 20 of the final 21 yards, including the final yard to covered in the air. Ultimately, only the last three yards were aerial and Moir came up a point short of the comeback.

Heading into SNF, Johnson led 69-48. Johnson saw Brent Celek and Philadelphia's defense combine to add 19 to his total while Tony Romo, Jeremy Maclin & Nick Folk added 27 to Gehr's for an 88-75 scoreline heading into MNF with Brandon Marshall still to go for Gehr. Johnson would remain the favorite so long as Marshall stayed out of the endzone, which Pittsburgh's defense managed to accomplish. Marshall's 112 yards still managed to get Gehr within two points, but the lack of a long final drive kept him from winning the game for Gehr after an eight point first half.

The opposite outcome of Nominee #3. McConnell trailed 86-65 heading into MNF with Tony Scheffler & Ben Roethlisberger left to go. I'll save the suspense on Scheffler as he had one catch for three yards in the game. That meant Roethlisberger needed 22 points for the win and 21 to tie. It came down to the final drive where McConnell needed two yards passing and a touchdown from Roethlisberger for the win. Not particularly unlikely in a close game, but not particularly likely when his team is up 21-10. On the seventh play of the drive he picked up the passing yards needed, but it would all come down to who, if anyone, put the Steelers in the end zone. An 18 yard Rashard Mendenhall run set the Steelers up with first and goal from the 3. The first two downs were chances for Mendenhall to get the points on the board he set up with his long run, but he failed both times setting up a bubble screen for Roethlisberger and the win for McConnell despite having two zeros on his roster.

Honorable Mention |
•Nate Morse 105, Forst Thomas 100 (LG2)- Pretty Simple MNF scenario: Morse needed seven points from Brandon Marshall to win. He got eight out of him in the first half and wound up with a five point win.
•Bill Horton 72, Jeff Brick 70 (LG3)- Brick needed 22 points from Roethlisberger on MNF to tie the game, but only achieved 20 despite the late tack-on touchdown pass. This was relegated to honorable mention status with Horton having an empty TE slot. Of course, Brick was unlucky enough to have Marcedes Lewis' zero himself.
•Shawn Temple 98, Andrew Senger 94 (LG4)- Senger needed 30 from Pittsburgh's defense to win the matchup through MNF. He managed 25 thanks to a defensive touchdown. If Temple hadn't of had Portis injured early it may not have been as close.
•Anthony Lombardo 73, Frank Borawski 68 (LG5)- Lombardo had Brandon Marshall & Kyle Orton left for MNF to go with a 73-44 lead up against Denver's defense and Santonio Holmes for Borawski. Thanks to Orton's negative one point for the game Borawski was able to get back in it, but Marshall's 112 receiving yards were enough to overcome a Denver defensive touchdown and nine points from Holmes.
•Kevin Whorton 88, Anders Nilsson 85 (LG8)- Whorton overcame having Clinton Portis hurt early when Jeremy Maclin scored four points on SNF. Mifflin entered the game trailing by a single point.
•Manuel Mateo 91, David Reckase 87 (LG1)- Mateo led the matchup 90-71 heading into MNF, but was on the TE end of a classic example of a battle between receivers on the same team as Reckase featured Hines Ward. Things started slow for both involved, but Ward's TD in the third quarter reinvigorated the matchup. Unfortunately the next big blow didn't come until Ward's late TD catch that created a final line that may have made the final line seem closer than it ultimately was, but worthy of a mention nonetheless. Had Reggie Wayne not thrown an interception this weekend this would have been a one point loss. If Kris Brown had hit his 42-yard try as time expired in the same game the result would have been a tie.
•Mike Miles 89, Colt Ciccone 83 (LG3)- Miles led 81-71 heading into SNF with Ciccone featuring DeSean Jackson & Miles Austin against Miles' Nick Folk. Given the offensive last few weeks for Austin & Jackson, Colt looked to be the favorite to overcome the ten point deficit, but neither got it going. Jackson was held to just 29 yards on two receptions while Austin was held catchless until his game winning 49-yard TD catch to add salt in the wound of the losing Eagles fan. Yahoo! projected them to scored a combine 23 points. They only managed 12.
