An ASFL2 season always has more than the overall championship at stake. Six conference champions were crowned, a Rookie of the Year was determined, a New Member of the Year was determined, five tier winners were named, and two sets of 14 members qualified for the 2012-2013 ASASFL Champions League & Super League. Conference Champions Great Lakes: Michael Lytle (668.57 Pts) Midwest: Matt Humpal (646.02 Pts) Northeast: Brian Secord (597.45 Pts) Southeast: Jay Soester (831.59 Pts) Western: Mark Yothers (704.33 Pts) International: Nathan Susanto (751.90 Pts) With Mike Miles' forced hiatus helping prevent him from repeating as Western Conference champ, Jay Soester now stands alone as the only member to win his conference in each of the league's first four seasons. Brian Secord became the fifth member to win his conference more than once (Jay Soester, Mike Miles, Anders Nilsson & Kevin Whorton). Michael Lytle and Matt Humpal in the Great Lakes and Midwest conferences respectively kept the conferences on the list of those without a member to have won the conference twice. This was the first time in league history a conference runner-up finished higher than fourth overall. Brad Duff's second place finish in the Southeast was matched by his overall finish, a record that can't be broken. This was the second consecutive season with three members that didn't win their conference in the top five overall as the International conference held rankings three through five after finishing second, fourth and fifth last season. The Northeast conference continued its tradition as the weakest historically as its champion finished lower than any other conference champion for the third time in four seasons. This is the third time in four seasons the conference's champion has finished 16th overall or worse. Kevin Whorton's 11th place finish in the inaugural season is the lone exception to that trend. Doug Eden's 20th place finish last season and Matt Humpal's 11th place this season as the Midwest conference champion are the only other instances of a conference champ finishing outside the top ten overall in league history. Nathan Susanto's victory in the International conference this season set a new record for closest winning margin. His 5.03 point victory bests the old record by 6.97 points as both Doug Eden & Dave Berrong won their conference by 12 points last season. This is the first season in league history where no conference was won by more than 100 points, but Brian Secord's 99.69 point margin of victory was damn close. Rookie of the Year 2009-2010: Robert Casares (570 Points) 2010-2011: Chad Gumm (597 Points) 2011-2012: Michael Lytle (668.57 Points) Congrats to Michael Lytle for winning Rookie of the Year. He becomes the second RoY winner to have also won his conference (matching Casares), but his ninth place finish overall is the lowest overall rank of any RoY. He finished 78.84 points ahead of David Cords for the honor, despite missing Fantasy Golf, with Tom Vobejda (-86.76), Dario Ambrozewiez (-111.03) & Michael Byrd Sr. (-136.75) rounding out the top five and the list of rookies to top 500 points. Steve Steffy, Darrel Whitford, Andy Nemecek, Terry Dolasinski & Anthony Pena Jr. rounded out the top ten. In order to qualify as a rookie, a member had to have registered for the league on November 1st, 2010 or later. New Member of the Year 2009-2010: Robert Casares (570 Points) 2010-2011: Dave Berrong (559 Points) 2011-2012: Michael Lytle (668.57 Points) Congratulations are again in order for Michael Lytle for winning the New Member of the Year title to go with his RoY title. In each of the three ASFL2 seasons with a NMoY, the winner has also won his conference. This is the second consecutive season with the NMoY coming from the Great Lakes conference. To qualify as a new member, a member had to have registered for the league on January 1st, 2011 or later. The results for the NMoY were the exact same as those for the RoY because recruiting didn't take place for the 2011-2012 season until January 1st of 2011. Up to that point I had been working setting up a new sign-up process and members database while migrating the league message board to the website from its old location. Partial Season Championship 2008-2009: Peter Gunz (130 Points) 2009-2010: Matt Burton (159 Points) 2011-2012: Sean Lambert (197.11 Points) Congrats to Sean Lambert for winning the Partial Season Championship. He squeaked by Jean-Peirre Fernandez by 4.14 points for the championship. It's far and away the closest race in the history of the category. Aleks Nakutis in third (137) and Eric Gilkey in fourth (124.01) were the only other members to top 100 points. Tier Winners Tier 1: Jay Soester (200.70 Points) Tier 2: Jay Soester (233.01 Points) Tier 3: Robert Flatt (153.87 Points) Tier 4: Aaron Freeman (86.18 Points) Tier 5: Dave Berrong (120.46 Points) This season saw Jay Soester become the second member in league history to win the same tier twice, matching Mike Miles' feat as having won Tier 2 on two separate occassions. No other tier has been won by a member more than once on any occassion. Soester also became the second member to win more than one tier in a given season, matching Anders Nilsson's feat accomplished in each of the last two seasons. That moves him up to the second most tier wins all time with his three one behind Nilsson for the record. Only Mike Miles has won more than one tier in their career other than those two. Soester also becomes the first to win both of the top two tiers in the same season or for a career. The 233.01 points scored in Tier 2 this season is the new record for any tier in league history, surpassing Anders Nilsson's 217 points in Tier 1 last season. All high tier point totals from this season aside from Soester's 200.70 mark in Tier 1 were all-time highs for their respective tier. Dave Berrong's 13th place overall finish while winning tier 5 was the low spot among the tier winners this season. That's a new record for the best low mark among tier winners in a season. This is also the second season in a row where all five tier winners qualified for the ASASFL Champions League on their overall rank instead of by winning a tier. The 6.4 average overall finish by the tier winners this season is the second best in history, trailing only the 5.6 average by the tier winners last season. The inaugural season has the worst mark at 9.4 with 2009-2010 second to last at 7.2. Congratulations to all who earned honors this season. |
