Friday Website Downtime |
1:32 AM ET on 7/4/15 by Jay Soester |
Let me begin by apologizing for the website downtime on Friday. It was down for somewhere around eight hours.
I've honored all picks that were emailed to me. I've credited those who would normally make a pick in MLB Day-to-Day Pickem with a pass for Friday if they did not make a pick. There didn't seem to be any issues in CFL Pickem. If you need to make a pick and the website isn't cooperating at any point in time, you can always email your pick to commish@theasfl.com.
Why was the website down?
The hosting company created a technical ticket for me on June 29th out of the blue saying there was a folder with too many files in it. A fairly reasonable request, but the folder and files were created over five years ago when I was a beta tester for OOTP9 & OOTPX, I had no reason to expect any issue. It's not the first time they've made a request for me to change something about the website and I'm sure it won't be the last. The server for this website is shared among many websites and the hosting company felt the size of the folder was degrading the server's performance in this instance.
When the hosting company creates technical tickets, their system automatically sends an email. Unfortunately, I've been having issues with the means I typically access the email address they sent the ticket to for the past week. That rendered me completely unaware of the issue until the website was down. As soon as I saw the issue, I rectified it and notified them of the fix. The hosting company told me the website would be back up within an hour or at worst in a few hours. I followed up with three every other hour from that point for six hours until the website came back around 6:20 PM ET, over eight hours after I fixed the issue.
You can also follow updates whenever the site is down via @asfl2 on Twitter. Hopefully that will be increasingly rare going forward.

New Feature: Email Reminder Links |
10:44 PM ET on 4/27/15 by Jay Soester |
I've fixed the email reminder script for Fantasy Games which feature it to include a link back to the game and, when applicable, a link to make each individual game pick.
The improvement applies to MLB Day-to-Day Pickem, NASL Pickem, Premier League Pickem, CFB Pickem, NFL Pickem, CFL Pickem, and NFL Locks. Please let me know if there are any problems.

Malware Warnings |
11:07 PM ET on 7/27/14 by Jay Soester |
I've been working for a few days to get the Malware warnings from Firefox and Chrome to be resolved.
There are ways to get around the warnings:
Chrome:
1) Click the "Advanced" link next to the "Go Back" Button.
2) Click "Proceed at your own risk"
FireFox:
1) Click "ignore this warning" in the bottom right of the alert box.
The issue is caused by the ad network on the website (Smowtion). Unfortunately, they seem to bee on the verge of going under and haven't been much help. I've been removing the ads page-by-page as best I can and will continue to do so. Please do not click on any ad that looks remotely suspicious.
I apologize for the issue and would like to reiterate that I would never knowingly put forth malware. This website is solely designed for fantasy sports, sports talk and community discussion. I have no intention of developing or releasing any sort of software at this time.
I'm currently appealing the distinction with google. Once it is overturned, the warnings should disappear entirely.

2013 League Survey |
2:32 AM ET on 1/3/13 by Jay Soester |
In a throw back to the earlier days of the league, I've put together a survey that I hope everyone will participate in. I've set up a database to catch the submissions to make determining the results (and subsequently, announcing them) a lot easier.
The sections with a light blue header and the section titled, "Membership Levels" are incredibly important (and the mini-section in between).
You can submit the survey again after the first time, simply use the same password. If you have any questions feel free to reply to this thread.
I pray to get a newsletter out Thursday before it's too late for Fantasy Golf, but I'm not remotely optimistic.
The first deadline of the Fantasy Golf season is 5 AM on Friday (roughly 26.5 hours away as I type this). If you're not already in one of our groups, please join: ID- 829/Password- 123456. Don't forget about NFL Playoffs Pickem and Fantasy NFL Playoffs as well.

New Feature: Site Search |
11:24 PM ET on 10/24/11 by Jay Soester |
The league website now features a new search feature which lets you utilize a custom google search to look for anything, anywhere on the website, including the message board.
Hopefully the navigation bar at the top of the page is enough for you to be able to move your way around the website, but if you're having a hard time finding what you're looking for, you can now search for it.

Help Needed |
11:55 PM ET on 10/7/11 by Jay Soester |
This is far and away my busiest time of the year. As a result, I need help getting a few things done while I work behind the scenes and maintain the games currently running.
The first assignment available is one that has been around before, the Keeper Leagues Baseball Rosters Assignment. I need a few members to send me the final rosters from each of the Fantasy Baseball Keeper Leagues this season in an excel file. The full details are available in the first post of the assignment thread. Each set of rosters is worth four bonus points.
The second assignment is new. I've put out a Golf Assignment as the first step toward moving Fantasy Golf from Yahoo! to the website (and/or creating a new Fantasy Golf game). It's a simple exercise in information gathering with excel again needed. I'm looking to build a file which lists all golfers that entered one of the 37 tournaments from this season and breaks down the list and number of tournaments they entered. I'm breaking down the work by month with three bonus points awarded for January through August and two awarded for September. The first post of the assignment thread has all the details.
There are two assignments that have been available for a while, but are still looking for participation. The NASCAR Assignment involves helping me move Fantasy NASCAR from Yahoo! to the website (and/or creating a new version of Fantasy NASCAR). I'm offering the standard bonus points, but can offer more down the road for your efforts. I'm still in need of members to help me gather information and update race results and ensure the accuracy of driver, team and schedule information. From there, I'll need help testing the new game and I'll be looking for a writer to handle weekly reviews/previews. That brings me back to the Writing Assignment, I'm looking for a member to do weekly NFL Preview/Reviews in the same manner as Nathan Susanto's work for Formula 1 and the Premier League. I'm also open to any other type of recurring articles from any member willing to write regularly, be it about sports, the internet, humor or all of the above. If you're interested in writing or have an idea for someone else to try, reply to the assignment thread.
Remember that assignments earn bonus points, which factor into the final championship standings. The first three seasons have seen a limit of 52, 62, and 79 bonus points factored into the final championship standings. If the NBA season is lost, bonus points could be as important as ever.

Keeper Leagues Bid System |
9:58 PM ET on 7/4/11 by Jay Soester |
The new Keeper Leagues Bid System is now available.
The new system is designed to allow for me to easily see member qualifications when determining who to give out available Keeper Leagues teams while also allowing those applying to see what they're up against and what's available. If you already have a team, you aren't obliged to submit a bid to keep the team; so long as you submit your players for the coming season, you'll still have it. Those already participating can use the system to bid for a team in a higher division, however.
The introductory page explains what criteria are used to give out teams.
The bid page automatically gathers the relevant information for all current ASFL2 members then allows the bidder to denote a preference for all teams by division. The roster for each team can be see via link from the team name or up to four can be see on the bid page. A bidder can also choose to denote his preference to be placed in each division beneath the team section.
The final piece of the system is the bids list page. The page features a list of bids received which includes a breakdown of the number of bids for a team in each division, the latest update of each bid and the number of bid updates. The page also features a breakdown of the likely availablity of each team and the number of times it has been bid for specifically.
This message board thread is available to ask any questions you may have about the system.

2009-2010 Review Survey Analysis |
3:53 AM ET on 6/13/11 by Jay Soester |
I should begin this piece by noting that I read through the surveys as I received them nearly a year ago and drew conclusions despite not having the time to truly quantify the results. The 42 members who submitted surveys didn't waste their time, what I've received helped shape how things were done this past season and will have an effect on the league going forward. All who provided me with their thoughts received between one and seven bonus points for their effort depending on how much information they provided. Most earned at least five points for the 2010-2011 season.
Visit Frequencies
The first thing I analyzed was the responses to how often each member checked or visited the website or their fantasy teams. Here was the breakdown of responses:

First and foremost (for everything from the survey), I have to take into account that I only received information from 42 of the 191 members to participate in the 2010-2011 season. On top of that, the membership range skewed decidedly toward the more active membership.
With that in mind, the results still backed what I expected. Members check their fantasy teams extensively more than the website, and that's certainly reasonable. Without the teams, the website serves no purpose. Based on the numerical results, the website and message board were checked roughly three to four times less often than fantasy teams were. The difference between the website and message board was marginal and on top of that I believe many didn't truly differentiate between visiting the two...either way, they are one in the same now, where they weren't a year ago.
What do I take from this? -
