2012 Arena Football League Pickem Preview |
2:43 AM ET on 3/9/12 by Jay Soester |
For those completely new to the sport, I'd recommend checking out the league's website and it's ustream.tv channel where you can watch any game not televised nationally. The NFL Network broadcasts one AFL game per week, usually at 8 PM ET on Friday night.
How is the AFL different from the NFL?
The most obvious difference is the fact that the games are played in an arena instead of a stadium. With that comes size constraints. Instead of the 120-yard NFL field, AFL fields are 50 yards long with eight yard endzones and are roughly half as wide as well (85 feet to 160 feet). The outer border of an AFL field features padded walls which are 48 feet high. The ends of an AFL field feature rebound nets which keep the ball in play except in the case of extra point tries. The field goal space itself is less than half that of the NFL (18.5 feet to 9 feet) and five feet higher off the ground (15 to 10). With the field size roughly halved, AFL teams play with eight on the field instead of the 11 in the NFL while they have just 20 active players for a game instead of the NFL's 46. Those 20 players (plus 4 inactives) have to last 18 games over 20 weeks, instead of 17 over 18, before the top four teams from each conference qualify for the postseason.
The current trajectory of NFL play is toward that of the AFL game. In the AFL, passing dominates. Last season, the AFL's rushing leader had 622 yards in 18 games on 167 rushes with his nearest competition finishing at 365 yards. Only three players topped 300 yards, with third through fifth on the list all quarterbacks. The leading passer managed 5,310 yards on 677 attempts while completing 67.2% of his attempts. The rules are set up to further that ideology along. An offense can send one receiver in motion toward the line of scrimmage at the snap while the defense can't blitz anyone but a designated linebacker while the other linebacker can't drop back more than five yards until the ball is thrown or pump faked. With just three DBs up against three WRs, it's tough for a defense to play zone in most situations. That predictability, on top of the need to play man-to-man, helps lead to higher scoring games.

AFL Pickem Available |
2:55 PM ET on 2/17/12 by Jay Soester |
AFL Pickem, the 16th game to be featured on the league website is now available. Its format mirrors NFL Pickem's but with the scoring tweaked slightly to account for the scoring differences.
Instead of a perfect game being worth 60 points, they're now worth 100 points. A correct pick alone is worth 60 points in AFL Pickem instead of 30 in NFL Pickem. The margin points now extend to picking within 17 points of the correct margin and having the correct margin is worth 18 points. Team score points will extend out to being within 21 points (for one point) with a correct team score prediction being worth eight points instead of the six in NFL Pickem.
I hope to have a full piece about the statistical differences between NFL scores and AFL scores before the season starts (March 9th). That aside, AFL games can see a flurry of points scored in the last minute as teams try to create quick scores to give themselves another chance (a la close basketball games seeing free throws late). With that in mind, I've given more leeway on the margin and score picks while putting more emphasis on the correct result prediction.
Please let me know of any mistakes or anything that needs clarification on the rules page or from the game otherwise. I'm looking for an assistant or two to help run the game this season by updating scores, I'll also need the assistant(s) to help make sure the schedule is up to date before, and throughout, the season with the correct dates and game times. Assisting me will earn you bonus points.
The breakdown of how bonus points will be earned is on the game rules page (I hope to do the same for Premier League Pickem in the next month or so, it should be somewhat similar to AFL Pickem). They mirror the same methods as NFL Pickem, but without the week win rankings coming into play.
My apologies to those excited for an Aussie Rules game, this is for the Arena Football League.

AFL Pickem Results |
6:28 PM ET on 9/24/11 by Jay Soester |
Unfortunately, it's been over a month since Jacksonville defeated Arizona as time expired in the Arena Bowl and I'm finally able to sort out the bonus points earned from the game.
Congrats to Andrew Senger for winning the game with 110 points and an overall record of 113-56 (66.9%). The bonus points awarded for game and total points placement follow the league's scoring formula with 7.5 BP and 2.5 BP awarded as the max respectively. Perfect Weeks were given 0.6 BP with 85%+ weeks at 0.4 BP and 75%+ weeks at 0.2 BP. Usually I would halve the number of members awarded bonus points in the total points standings, but given the nature of the game and numbers of the game, I decided to expand the formula to all involved.
In total, 42 members participated in the game with each earning something for their efforts. I hope to be able to run AFL Pickem through the website's Fantasy Games section instead of the message board next season. I'm not sure whether or not the scoring format will change to something resembling that used by NFL Pickem or something otherwise different from a correct pick being worth a point. Given the nature of AFL scoring, I have reservations about using the NFL Pickem scoring format.
